April 3rd Location: Monrovia

The waves were 5 to 8 feet at Robertsport…some people would think that’s a dream come true but I was terrified, fortunately on the first night the waves were on the tamer side; as Taya, Justin and I were out on the waves I saw a little green head pop up…sure enough it was Crush the sea turtle. The turtle is actually a Leatherback sea turtle and is one of the largest turtles at around 3 to 6 feet long and weighing up to 1000lbs at adulthood. These turtles are so on the endangered species list, a few surfers I know have a passion for these turtles and buy either their eggs or baby turtles that are sold on the street by local fisherman, they incubate the turtles and set them free after a few months. One of the baby sea turtles was named Crush by one of my friends when he set him free a few months ago…and now about a month later I am surfing up the coast and about 5 of these leatherback sea turtles appear anywhere from 1 to 10 feet away from me, at first I thought it was amazing and then I started to get nervous that they may mistake my toes for jellyfish (which is what they eat).
